FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FRIENDS OF LULU TO START NEW FUND AT CAPE

April 7, 2006- Friends of Lulu (www.friends-lulu.org), the national nonprofit organization whose purpose is to promote and encourage female readership and participation in the comic book industry, is launching a new fund and will be jumpstarting it at CAPE this year!

The fund will be for women in the industry who wish to pursue legal action in sexual assault cases, by helping to provide money for representation and also emotional support when needed.

“I think it is only natural to add this to our focus,” said FOL’s National Vice President Ronée Garcia Bourgeois. “In order for us to truly be an organization aiding women, we need to recognize the fact that this IS a problem and work toward education and the elimination of such treatment.”

As the official jumpstart to this fund, Friends of Lulu will be holding a raffle at CAPE on May 6th in Dallas. Gotham City Limits (http://gothamcitylimits.com/) in Jacksonville, Florida, has donated a Sin City Prize pack consisting of a Sin City Black Death Icelandic Schnapps Ashtray, Cerveza Cango Ashtray, Sin City: Magnet Set, Fuzzy Dice, DF Miho Litho and The Girls of Sin City Action Figure 5 Pack Black and White Version, all of which add up to an approximate retail value of $130!

“The purpose of the raffle is two-fold,” explains Bourgeois. “First, to get exposure to the cause and also to solicit for donations to our upcoming auctions, the biggest of which will be held at HeroesCon this year. So far, the response has been great. Creators, retailers and private collectors are donating everything from original art to memorabilia but we can never have enough for such a cause.”

Make sure to stop by the Friends of Lulu booth at Cape to learn more!

Donation inquiries can be sent to ronee@friends-lulu.org

Lea here, being both cheerleader and party pooper all-in-one: FIRST, I LOVE this fund. It is LONG overdue, and I hope it will not only encourage women who want to continue in comics but are facing career-destroying compromises to come forward, but that the ability for a woman in comics to have her day in court will cast sunshine under the rocks.
But the inaugural raffle being a prize package from SIN CITY leaves a bad taste in the mouth. An auction of things that are more appropriate, instead of items from a book and movie about women running a city as hookers.

Hooray for the fund. Bleah on the featured prize package. (One entry up, I counter with a call for donations.)

Regarding the FoL fund which will help women get legal representation in sexual harassment cases, I'd like to counter my bitter bitching about the Sin City package with something useful.

GALS, DONATE! Yes, especially gals. Prints, calendars, merch, books. (Even originals!)

Hello! Lisa J., Leigh, Raina, Leia, Clio, Jen Wang, Gail Simone, Dylan, Erica, Vera B., Jenn Manley Lee!
Wouldn't some of Jen's sexhay girls be an awesome ironic counterpoint? A lovely Vera print?

You get the idea.

Email ronee @ friends-lulu.org to make donations or merch and/or $$. I'd LOVE to see GAM contributors and alumae represented!

MUD!

Here is what my kids and I did today: MUD.
Garden hose, mostly-dirt backyard, a dog who likes water. We threw mudballs (because we have no snow here, it is mudball fights for us).
We squished around in the cool mud, then walked on dry dirt and had monster feet.
I peeled off the mud later and marvelled at the print of my foot in it.
We threw mudballs at the shed and the back wall of the house.
We pulled the mud from between our toes and made more balls!
We made a huge, delightful mess.
Getting clean after was nice, too.

I highly recommend a good mudding. It's like a combination of day spa and Jackass.

I do remember why I stayed out of dirt clod fights as a kid: they HURT! And yet, you laugh like crazy!
