NLEx: Fireflies
Sep. 2nd, 2010 09:46 pmNow, the comic!
Inspired by the song "Fireflies" by Owl City. Owl City's official video and Captain Valor's American Sign Language performance follow. Both are massively charming. Thanks to

That's right! My story "Ribbons Undone" from the 2009 EisnerAward-Winning anthology COMIC BOOK TATTOO, and inspired by Tori Amos' song of the same name, is now up in its entirety for FREE at webcomicsnation.com.
This story was a huge break for me in terms of style (what seeing all of Danny Phantom in two weeks will do for a girl!) and media (being my first all-digital comics story).
I really loved making it, and I hope you dig it! Please comment at webcomicsnation.com or here!

As entertaining as drubbing the stb-ex is, I’ve decided not to waste another damn second writing about him. The next time I mention him, barring a 911 call because he does something stupid, is the day I’m officially divorced. We can all wear red dresses and dance.
On to better things!

Mar. 3rd, 2009 10:29 amI wrote a little something about donations for Karen Ellis for Gail Simone, and it’s now up at CBR with words from Gail herself and Hannah Dame from Girl-Wonder.org.
Even small donations help, and I have the story to prove it!
Go Team Comics!
Crossposted from divalea.netJust got email from Rachel Edidin letting people know that webcomicker Karen Ellis of Planet Karen has lost pretty much everything in a house fire. Her upstairs neighbor was killed, and Karen’s apartment is currently uninhabitable. As you might expect, I am sitting here typing this with big impossible tears having their way with my face.
Just as you helped me, and Carla Hoffman, and the AU Victorians, I’m asking yet again for you to send a little somethin’ somethin’ to Karen. $5. will help. $1. will help. Send what you can, and don’t feel bad if it’s small. Lots of little loves will save the day.
Click here to go to Karen’s webpage and hit that donation button! (link will open in a new window)

ETA: Summer donated two allowances to Karen, which got me crying all over again, because I done raised that girl right, and I’m so proud of her.

I'll post pics tomorrow, for today all your need to know is:
Brad Bankston has wood. BIG wood.
He showed me his wood.
His wood has full extension.
And he made me blush by making a joke dirtier than mine, and if he wants it told, he'll have to tell it himself!
Austin Books has begun converting their back issue display from long boxes and tables into wooden boxes. The topmost boxes are angled out so that the books don't get bent. The second and third boxes pull out. They make a soooooper gorgeous display.
We bought books and got a couple headless Supergirls, which I am going to make new heads for and retouch the paint. Crisis Supergirl action figure was recalled because the final product was impressively dreadful. Stores got credit by just shipping back the heads.
We played with headless Supergirl the whole trip.
Hello, Brad and Tracy and Coffee Bitch! Sorry I missed you, Herschel!
Diana Schutz says she told Gail the picture was for the cover. Gail says she didn't know. Gail didn't tell me it was for the cover.
Diana Schutz says why did I send it? I sent it because Gail asked me too.
What it gets down to is this: I've seen the letter from Schutz to Gail. She says the picture is unuseable. Schutz sent me a forward from the designer saying the image was unuseable. Gail and I both draw the conclusion that the picture will not be used. Wacky!
My answer to Diana:
Dear Diana,
I've answered all the questions you raised in my
second letter to you, but let's recap:
I didn't know the image was for the cover, I said, or
I'd have been happy to provide rates. (Which you
would've been free to reject or negotiate to fit the
budget for your book.) Gail never communicated that it
was for the cover to me. I sent it along as a favor to
her, thinking the small size required would mean it
would be inside somewhere.
I am terribly sorry for the misccominication between
the three of us. This is what happens in the game of
editorial telephone.
I have to add, though, that if the image was
unacceptable for the final cover, it shouldn't have
been used at all. Because I sent it, because you had
it, was no reason or excuse to make free use of it.
Additionally, the last communication from you was
over a year ago. It beggars belief that an acceptable
photo could not be secured in that time, especially
considering that Gail has had new ones made since
then. One of them appeared in Bust magazine in April.
No worries about Wizard. The picture did run with a
credit. It was microscopic and on the facing page, but
it was there. The credit also appears on Gail's page
on Wikipedia. As someone who works for a company with
lucrative properties, I'm sure you understand the need
to not only be compensated for one's work, but also to
vigorously defend it.
