Damn Dog 12.3.2007
Dec. 3rd, 2007 04:50 pmI sang to Deitzel (which is what King named her) before I left her to catch her cosmic train to The Bridge. Before, there was suspicious calm, distant stiff-legged stares and blood. Search words that led me to "parvo" were still in my search bar when I sat down to write this.
I cried tears big enough that I could hear them hit the floor as I bent over Deitzel and hugged her and asked the nurse in the expensive emergency clinic if I was doing the right thing and why did I even care about a dog I didn't own and wasn't planning to keep.
Deitzel's songs were one just for her, and one I always sing when it's time to tell one of the critters goodbye. I stayed with her after she looked away, and got in a last few selfish scratches and kisses for the ride home.
Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullabye
-Thomas Dekker
How could anyone ever tell you
You were anything less than beautiful?
How could anyone ever tell you
You were less than whole?
How could anyone fail to notice
That your loving is a miracle?
How deeply you're connected to my soul.
