When You Go Outside, Things Happens
Aug. 11th, 2007 01:37 amBTW: Vista STILL WORKING! The Function interface is fantastic! Very beautiful. Oh, how I love this, now that it works.
Summer, Boy and I went to the park today. We:
Walked through the now mostly-dry creek bed. (Mostly dry means PATIO FIXING IS IMMINENT!)
We saw pools of water with minnows in them.
I made a command decision that we would save our drink cups to catch and release minnows on the return trip.
We walked through the grassy parts.
Summer turned over a rock and found no snakes.
She experimented with turning over a bigger one. I resolve to return with friends to see how many people it takes. And put it back. Of course!
We went to the slides.
I enjoyed the biggest slide as it is a marvel of the best of the best terrifying playground equipment from my childhood. Metal, rusty, noisy, exciting small stress fractures. And, OMG, it could be shaken violently from side to side! Exactly the sort of thing that "LittleJimmyMommies" (as Summer calls them) would have dug up and destroyed just because someone might get hurt. (Never mind that their preschool Jimmys and Dakotas aren't the intended users of said slide and their moms wouldn't let them on it anyway.)
Summer described the scenario of LittleJimmyMommy taking away the Slide of Hilarious Terror. Her breathtaking narrative included rich detail, including the fillip of having LJM ignoring Jimmy to read "Diet Digest." Oooooh.
(That was all brought on by a drastic and incredibly expensive, unnecessary and charm-free playground redo at our former church.)
Summer fell off the end of the slide after going down backwards. Oh, for a camera to have captured the beauty of feet sticking straight up in the air.
Boy lay on a smaller slide and enjoyed the sky and leaves.
We left and went to the Leon Valley Little Victory Garden and enjoyed the wildflowers. There were tall mixed flowers of orange and hot pink. I marveled again at how Nature hands out wonderful color combinations like gifts.
Right next to the LVLVG is a bathroom building with a dog watering station, which includes a faucet that pours into a bowl, and a shower of sorts. The shower is about 5'x5' and is four pipes with holes in them. Turn it on, and there is something like a localized rain.
There was a water fight.
It was awesome.
We stood in a rest station after, which was more like a teeny pavilion. We shall eat lunch there, soon.
We walked back to the creek, soaking wet, but very comfortable as the air evaporated the water off of us.
We went back to the puddles and started catch and release.
I was doing okay until I fell over. That seems to be a theme: do something, and Things Happen. I already had a teeny minnow in my cup, which I crushed when I fell, but the fish was okay! The cup, not so much.
Summer caught a fairly large minnow, and it was soft and warm to the touch when we dipped our fingers into the cup.
Minnows were released and we walked home, most satisfied with ourselves. I taught Boy to spell "slide," "fun," "down."
I spent two hours in the tub after, and read an entire book. I did fill the tub, thanks.
My hand is bruised, and my wrist torqued where I fell on them. (And here I thought I did a good tuck.) This is the price for Going Out and Doing Things. Considering I got it while fishing with a cup while hanging with my kids--well, how awesome is that?
ALL PLAY: Who's got a fishing story? Baiting hooks? Baiting a hook with oneself? TELL!
