Will Eisner, RIP
Jan. 4th, 2005 10:40 amWill Eisner Kicked Ass Nearly Nine Decades.
Eisner is proof of concept that owning your work beats trying to find it.
He was a great artist, a sweet guy. He gave me quite a thrill when he said last year after our panel at San Diego CC that he loved my work.
Requisicat en pace. ROCK ON.

Will Eisner makes the AP and I Meander
Jan. 4th, 2005 09:04 pmIt would've been nice for Will to have been on the AP newswire for his amazing career BEFORE he died, but at least it's not "Supermodel Rilly, Rilly Sad About That Old Guy Who Made Cartoons".
I was having such a bad day yesterday, between deadline, Freas, a pileup of deaths in my extended family that I consider it a personal mercy of fate that I didn't get this news until this morning.
Eisner gave me hopes. First it was the hope I could make comics in something other than The Marvel Way. Comics that are theatrical, filmic, dramatic, poignant, sexy, funny. Then it was "I can be really damn old and still be truckin' on making my own stuff instead of going hat in hand to one of the Big Two hoping for work for an "old-fashioned" cartoonist. If I use what I've got to TELL MY OWN STORIES, I can do it UNTIL I DIE."
From a letter sent to me by Toren at Xmas:
"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of
arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather
to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body
thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a
ride!"
That's it!
Break out the drawing supplies, the good food, the booze, AND USE IT UP!
Deprivation is for fools.
What's the point of looking like a lamb, anyway?
They get et with mint jelly!
